Time duration examples

Work shift

Calculate a shift from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM and deduct an unpaid break.

Overnight interval

An end time earlier than the start time is treated as ending the next day.

Decimal hours

Use decimal hours or total minutes for personal time records, estimates, and billing calculations.

How time duration is calculated

Calctiva converts each clock time to seconds after midnight and subtracts the start from the end. When the end is earlier, it is treated as occurring on the following day.

Optional breaks are deducted after the raw duration is calculated. Decimal hours divide the final seconds by 3,600, while total minutes divide them by 60.

Results are practical estimates and are not legal, payroll, contractual, or billing advice. Verify rules and rounding requirements that apply to your situation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours between two times?
Enter the start and end times, then select Calculate duration. Calctiva shows hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes.
Can the calculator handle an overnight shift?
Yes. When the end time is earlier than the start time, Calctiva treats it as ending the next day and labels the result.
Can I subtract a break?
Yes. Open Advanced settings and enter break hours and minutes. The break cannot be longer than the raw elapsed duration.
What happens when the two times are identical?
Identical times equal zero by default. Advanced settings can treat them as a complete 24-hour interval.
Does Calctiva store the times I enter?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and entered times, breaks, and results are not sent to Calctiva or included in analytics.
